About Edward Colston

Edward Colston was born in the parish of Temple, Bristol, on 2nd November 1636. As he built his wealth in the 17th century, he made his mark as one of the most generous philanthropists in British history. Although Colston eventually left Bristol on various business ventures, he never neglected his hometown. He constructed almshouses in the city to help the less fortunate. In the realm of education, he helped fund both the Queen Elizabeth's Hospital all-boys school and Colton's School, a co-educational institution. He also gave generously to restore and maintain several of Bristol's churches, including the city cathedral.
The honouring of "the pious and immortal memory of Edward Colston" on 13th November each year has become part of the proud and colourful history of this ancient city.
