Support for the Elderly

The Society provides help by means of grants and/or annuities to, principally, ladies over 50 who are in reduced circumstances. The Society has professional advice to assess the needs of those applying to the Society for assistance. This is supplemented by the Society’s Ladies Committee who provide pastoral support to those to whom grants are made. The sorts of things grants are given for include new cookers, repairs to heating systems and new beds.

The need for this kind of support is rising as many older people are living on small or fixed incomes and are struggling to cope. A comment from a member of the Ladies Committee underscores this

“In the time I have been on the Ladies Committee I have certainly had my eyes opened to the needs of some of those we set out to help. In this day and age one cannot fail to be shocked at seeing unhygienic conditions in poorly kept homes, yet if you have the courage to look in the fridge for milk for a cup of tea there might be two shelves of tinned pet food for a beloved cat and nothing else”.
